Problem with
outlook.exe?
Title
– outlook.exe
Description
– As well as being the main executable process for the Microsoft
Outlook application, this process has also been attributed to
the Mimail.Q worm. In order to determine whether the version
running on your system is the genuine one you should scan your
system with security software or check the location of the file.
If the process is genuine then whether it is disabled or left
enabled is down to the discretion of the user. Microsoft Outlook
will still run properly without this process and if it is
causing any problems, for example preventing you from opening
the Outlook application, then it can be safely disabled. The
process will run again when you next start the Microsoft Outlook
program.
Associated Errors
– Some users have noted that the genuine outlook.exe process can
hang on exiting the application itself. In this case it can be
difficult or even impossible to open Outlook without disabling
the active process.
If the outlook.exe process is indicative that you have been
infected with the Mimail.Q worm then the application will
attempt to establish its own SMTP engine and access the Internet
in order to send emails. This may be picked up by any Firewall
that you have installed on your system.
Recommended Solution
– Scan your system, paying particular attention to the existence
of outlook.exe processes and applications. If your antispyware
or antivirus flags this file as being infected then clean or
remove it. Disabling the genuine outlook.exe process should not
cause any problems with your system or even the smooth running
of Outlook itself. The process can also be disabled at the
discretion of the user in order to save system resources or to
counteract any problems that you may be suffering. Once you
re-open Outlook the process will run again, hopefully with no
errors this time.
